Have you seen nature go mad? Storms that could capsize cruise ships, tornadoes that rip apart anything it touches, even a small dog attacking its owner. Mother Nature is a really scary woman. She’s not just some other psychotic lady. She can control nature, kinda like My Super Ex-Girlfriend to the 99th power. This week I was a couple of buildings away from being struck by lightning. I watched rain and wind go at it to make room for sunshine two minutes later. I even saw two crows duke it out with a hawk. These things, I know, are not so crazy in Calgary for you to stop and look but, there is something to think about there.

When I think of nature, I think of the way things just are – things that are untouched and unspoiled. We find beauty in things that are natural, not ruined by industry or progress. It’s relaxing, I’m sure, but when you deal with people, is it the same thing? I mean, is it beautiful to find people’s true nature? Do we find great joy when people are rude, unreliable, chronic liars and arrogant fools? Surely, we don’t find it enjoyable. However, when we try to change those people or encourage them to be better, they go on the defensive. It’s against their nature.

When someone asks me to change: a professor, my boss or people close to me, I get on the defensive because it’s not really who I am. Why do people want to change me when I’m fine just the way it is?

Truth is: It’s the most difficult thing to go against nature. When people change from drug addictions, long-time criminal habits and even infidelity to their spouses, they go against who they are who they have become. They want to be better people. It’s funny when we try so hard to change our world that it has already changed us. Businesspeople graduate to equalize the economy between the rich and the poor only to succumb to the same greed that others possess. Those activists who rise to become powerful politicians to bring about positive change become the very agents of corruption and war that they strived to work against.

Love is natural too. So to be more loving and more expressive with our emotions is something natural. Good luck getting a guy to change just like that, but they will become more natural people too, to become better people. Pure values are natural like kindness, humility and perseverance. Organic beauty is a wonderful thing. It’s harder still to discern if they are being true to themselves or to other people. Are their true natures what they’re really showing? Could you possibly find the nature of your worst enemy great? Maybe, not, maybe not right now. People do change, for it’s the nature of things.
